BITCH Friday, September 30, 8:00pm
WITH KATIE CASH The Crown at the Carolina
ABOUT BITCH
Bitch makes witchy poet pop. She does it with violins and synthesizers, and the songs she writes are spectral, heartbreaking, political, and beautiful. The longstanding queer music icon has been performing for over 20 years. She grew up with a tap-dancing studio in the basement of her childhood home, and began playing the violin, her first love, as a young child. Bitch first achieved notoriety as one half of the queer folk duo Bitch and Animal. The band went on to tour with Ani DiFranco, whom they caught the ears of while playing a gig at a pizza shop in Provincetown on Cape Cod. In the mid 2000s, Bitch went solo, and shared stages with the Indigo Girls, acted in the film Shortbus, co-wrote a song with Margaret Cho, produced two albums of her elder folk hero Ferron, and licensed her music to The L Word. Eight years ago, she began to weave together Bitchcraft, her latest record.
The resulting album is like Joni Mitchell set to a click track; it’s queer Cyndi Lauper; it’s neon pink, in your face, ready to hex you with its brilliance. It’s an unbelievably fun record that is capable of breaking your heart a little bit. It also makes you think: about the state of the world, about evil politicians, about what it means to exist as a woman, and how to find joy along the way.
ABOUT KATIE CASH
Bay Area-bred singer-songwriter-guitarist Katie Cash writes personally charged, emotion-packed songs and performs them with a passionate urgency that marks her as a uniquely compelling artist. Cash's commanding songcraft, expressive vocals and bracing guitar work make her debut solo album Gift Horse, produced by Julie Wolf (Ani DiFranco, Carly Simon, Indigo Girls) a rousing collection that showcases her pointed songwriting and the edgy musical sensibility that's been honed by extensive roadwork and onstage experience.
Tickets are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. A $3 processing fee and tax will be added to each ticket.
SPIN THE CROWN Friday, October 7, 6:00pm
HOSTED BY THEGENTLEMAN BOSS & KATIE.BLVD The Crown at the Carolina
Grab your skates and get ready to roll! SPIN THE CROWN is a four-hour, dance-skating event hosted by The Gentleman Boss and Katie.Blvd, two leaders in Greensboro’s emerging music scene. Local acts Brydecisive and Professor X will join them to play skate anthems new and old to keep you rolling!
This party is by skaters for skaters: no skate rentals provided. Please note: Alcohol will NOT be available at this event. Liability waiver must be signed and returned before entry to SPIN THE CROWN.
ABOUT BRYDECISIVE
Brydecisive is a producer, DJ, and visual artist who is making his way throughout the electronic music scene. Growing up in Raleigh, he deviated from his peers as one of the few who developed an interest in house and techno music, taking up the craft of producing and DJ-ing. His first project “Ode” gave us a taste of what he’s capable of, and he later dove deeper into house sounds with his EP “0ne of Me,'' featuring bouncy, chord-driven tracks like “Thought I Was Lost”. Brydecisive doesn’t limit himself to one genre, hoping to create a new sound that can be recognized to others as his own.
ABOUT PROFESSOR X
Professor X is a producer, DJ, and music supervisor who has worked with artists such as Phocuz, Lion Kueen, and Macklyn.
ABOUT KATIE.BLVD
Katie.Blvd is a singer/songwriter, beat maker and DJ whose music is inspired by topics of diversity, personal discovery, and her love of hip-hop. Her writing and production is a method of telling her own personal story as well as attempting to connect with an untouched audience of those stuck in the past and in the out-crowd.
Tickets are $7 in advance, or $10 at the door, tax included.
ABOUT THE CROWN AT THE CAROLINA
The Crown at the Carolina, located on the third floor of the historic Carolina Theatre, started its life as the 1927 vaudeville theatre’s original sign shop, churning out iconic posters and ads for early touring shows and movies. After spending the decades that followed as a storage area, the space underwent its first phase of renovation to open to the public as The Crown in September 2013.
Utilizing the quiet programming months of the pandemic, The Crown underwent a second wave of renovation in 2021, reopening with improved technology and relocated sound booth, expanded bar area, renovated restrooms, and new lounge and dressing rooms for performers. Now a high-tech, flexible performance space, The Crown is celebrated for its delicate acoustics, inviting ambiance, intimate setting, as well as its accessibility to the Triad’s performing arts community. Warm, exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and huge lead-paned windows (original to the building) bring the room its natural, historic, up-cycled “cool” factor.
