GCS to Celebrate Amazing Employees
District seeks outstanding staff anecdotes throughout May

Greensboro, N.C. – Teachers throughout the district are known for helping students after school and on weekends.

But earlier this year, one teacher literally saved a student’s life. Tamara Settle, who teaches first-graders at Sternberger Elementary, was having lunch with her students when she noticed another student at an adjacent table choking on a carrot. Settle responded quickly, saving his life by performing the Heimlich Maneuver.

This isn’t the first time a GCS employee has saved a life. Several times, school staff members have performed CPR or helped others in distress. But such efforts aren’t the only good deeds worth noting. The district wants to recognize and celebrate the many ways that its employees provide outstanding service or go above and beyond what’s expected.

GCS designates May as Amazing GCS Month. Families and the community are invited to share how teachers, principals, media specialists, bus drivers, custodians and other employees make a difference. Stories can be shared by sending an email to goodnews@gcsnc.com or on social media with the hashtag #amazingGCS.
